Dad told me my solder joints looked like cold spaghetti
After he saw the mess I made trying to fix a old VCR from a thrift store in Eugene, he sat me down and showed me how to properly tin the tip and use flux. Turns out I was holding the iron like a pencil for way too long and burning everything. He made me redo 6 joints before he let me move on to the next component. Has anyone else had a family member completely change their technique with one comment?

Nah, my old man just handed me a roll of solder and said figure it out.

What really turned things around for me was when my uncle finally had me try a temperature controlled iron instead of the cheap one I was using. Once I dialed it in right, my joints stopped looking like crap and actually started flowing smooth instead of balling up. Never knew heat setting mattered that much until someone forced me to mess with it.
