I finally stopped twisting wire nuts like a gorilla after a guy in Amarillo said my junctions looked like chewed gum

Last month I was helping rewire a trailer harness and showed a buddy at the shop in Amarillo my splice work, and he said my junctions looked like chewed gum with wire nuts cranked on so tight the copper was nicked. I read up on it that night and switched to pre-twisting the wires with pliers and giving the nut just a snug turn until it stops on its own, and nothing has come loose since. Has anybody else had a joint fail down the road because they over-tightened it, or am I the last one to figure out snug beats tight?
