My neighbor said he rewired his garage door opener with speaker wire, and now I can't stop thinking about it
I was out front raking leaves in Hartford last Saturday when my neighbor Dave wandered over and mentioned he fixed his garage door opener with a spool of speaker wire he had in the basement. He said it worked fine for about three weeks until the door started opening on its own at 2 in the morning and spooked his wife. I laughed at the time, but then I remembered I did something almost as bad with an extension cord and a window fan in college. Now I'm wondering how many of us have a moment like that sitting in the back of our heads. What is the dumbest substitution you have ever made on a repair just because it was what you had on hand?

Waited, he actually used speaker wire on a garage door opener? That thing runs on 120 volts and speaker wire is meant for tiny signals, not real current. I am honestly surprised his house did not catch fire before the door started ghosting him at 2 in the morning. The fact that it worked for three whole weeks is the part that really gets me, because that just proves it was waiting to fail in the worst way possible. Dave got lucky his wife only got spooked and not fried.
