My uncle's 'just use electrical tape' advice cost me a new toaster oven
He swore wrapping a frayed cord in tape was fine, so I did it on my old toaster oven last Tuesday. It sparked and tripped the breaker within 3 days, and the repair guy at the shop on 5th Street said that's basically playing roulette with your house. Anyone else got a relative whose wiring shortcuts ended up way more expensive than doing it right?

My dad did the same thing with an old lamp cord and it melted the plug off the wall. Ended up paying an electrician $150 to fix the outlet. Now I just replace anything with a damaged cord, tape is for paper cuts not wiring.
