That $3 phone charger from the gas station almost burned my couch down

Last month I was stuck in Tulsa with a dead phone and grabbed one of those cheap chargers off the rack next to the beef jerky. Plugged it in at home that night and within 20 minutes the plastic casing was HOT, like actually painful to touch. I pulled it out and the prongs had started to warp and the little chip inside smelled like burnt toast. Took it apart and the wires inside were thinner than a strand of hair and taped together with what looked like packing tape. I always figured bad chargers just charge slow, not that they could literally start a fire on my living room rug. Now I only buy the ones with the UL logo or whatever from a real store, even if it costs 4 times as much. Has anyone else had a close call with bargain bin electronics that got scary fast?
