Tried replacing a light switch and ended up tripping the breaker on Christmas morning

I swapped the wires without turning off the power first and the whole living room went dark while my family watched me stand there holding a smoking screwdriver, has anyone else done something this dumb on a holiday?

Honestly, have you checked the breaker box to make sure it's not a tripped GFCI outlet somewhere else that's tied into that circuit? I did the exact same thing last Thanksgiving, turned out the switch was fine but I'd blown a GFCI in the garage.

Bro that is such a pain, I feel you on that one. I literally spent a whole afternoon chasing a ghost in my living room lights last year, turned out the stupid GFCI in the bathroom had tripped and killed half the circuit. Felt like such a dummy when I finally found it hiding behind a pile of towels. Hope you get it sorted quick, nothing worse than dealing with electrical gremlins when you just want the lights to work.
