Customer asked for a 'gift card style' cake, then said it was too fancy

Last month at the farmers market in Portland, this lady pointed at my $45 custom cake and goes, 'I want that but boring, like a dollar store vibe.' I stripped it down to white frosting and one rose, and she said it looked 'unprofessional.' Has anyone else had a client ask for simple and then complain it's too plain?

The "dollar store vibe" line made me laugh, that's a new one. I've had people say "just keep it simple" and then get mad it wasn't fancy enough, so now I always send a photo of the plain version first and make them say "yes" in writing. Saves me a headache every time.
