Had a cake collapse at 3am and it totally changed how I temp my butter

I was frosting a birthday cake for a coworker in my tiny kitchen in Houston when the whole middle layer slid off at 2:47am - turns out my butter was way too soft because I'd microwaved it for 10 seconds instead of waiting. Has anyone else had a midnight baking disaster that made you switch up a core technique?

nah i gotta disagree here lol. microwaving butter for 10 secs is totally fine if you're paying attention. the issue wasn't the microwave, it was that you didn't check it before using. i nuke mine all the time and just give it a little squeeze test first.
