Hot take: I thought putting mayo in cake batter was a prank until my grandma's recipe proved me wrong

My grandma from Phoenix swore by adding a cup of mayo to her chocolate cake mix, and I thought she was messing with me. I tried it last week, just to humor her, and the cake came out super moist and rich, way better than my usual oil and eggs. She said it's an old trick from her diner days to make box mix taste homemade. Has anyone else used a weird ingredient that actually worked?

My aunt used to put a can of tomato soup in her spice cake. Sounded totally gross when I was a kid, but it makes the cake really red and keeps it from drying out. She got the recipe from an old church cookbook. It works the same way the mayo does, adding fat and moisture. Some of those old kitchen tricks are surprisingly solid.

Whoa, that's wild! Tomato soup in cake sounds nuts but I believe it. Those old recipes knew what was up.

Ever try using sour cream in brownies? It sounds weird but makes them so fudgy.
