I chose butter over shortening for pie crust and I'm sticking with it
Everyone in my baking group swears by shortening for flaky crusts, but I used butter in my apple pie last weekend and it turned out amazing. The flavor was so much better, even if the crust wasn't as perfect looking. Anybody else prefer butter even if it's more finicky?

My last butter crust was actually flakier than any shortening one I've made.

Remember my grandma used to swear by lard for her pie crusts, said butter made them crumbly. Then I tried this trick my neighbor told me about where you freeze the butter and grate it into the flour like cheese. First time I did that the crust came out so light and flaky my husband asked if I bought it from the bakery down the street. But I still think the flavor of butter is way better than shortening or lard, even if it takes a little more patience to handle.
