My starter died after I left it out in the cold last week
I forgot my sourdough starter on the counter during that freeze and it turned gray and smells like acetone. Any tips for reviving a sad starter or should I just toss it and start a new one from scratch?

Gray starter and acetone smell usually means it's hungry and stressed, not dead. Same thing happens with people when they skip meals and get hangry, just feed it a few times and it'll bounce back.

Lol yeah I've had this happen too. Don't toss it yet, that acetone smell is just the yeast being super stressed from the cold. Feed it a good ratio like 1:2:2 (starter:flour:water) for a couple days and it should come back to life. Just keep it in a warm spot around 75-80F if you can, that helps wake it up faster. If it still smells weird after 3 feedings then yeah start over, but odds are it'll perk right up.
