PSA: My old sourdough starter from a 2019 farmers market in Boise finally gave out last week.
I tried everything, from feeding it with different flours to keeping it in a warmer spot, but after five years, it just wouldn't bubble anymore, so has anyone got a reliable backup method for when your starter quits?

Why do the things we count on always seem to quit on us?

Five years from a farmers market starter is incredible. That thing was a real survivor. @jones.grace is right, it's always the things we trust that let us down. You could try drying some of your next active starter as a backup. Just spread it thin on parchment, let it dry, and break it into flakes. Store it in a jar. It's saved me a couple times.
