Rant: I spent $40 on a 'professional' cake leveler that just wrecked my layers
I saw this fancy stainless steel cake leveler online and thought it would be a game changer for my layer cakes. It ended up pulling and tearing the crumb on three separate 8-inch vanilla sponges I made for a birthday order. Has anyone found a tool that actually works or is a serrated bread knife still the best way to go?

Oh man, I feel that. I bought one of those wire levelers with the little handles and it just turned my cake into a pile of crumbs (it was a sad, expensive day). I've had way better luck just using a long serrated knife and slowly spinning the cake on a turntable. Honestly, the fancy tools look cool in the box but my regular old bread knife hasn't failed me yet.

Those wire levelers are actually great if you use them right. You probably had the cake too cold or the wire too tight. A proper tool with a little practice beats freehanding it with a knife every time.
