Barbers keep getting their fade lines started too high

I've seen three new guys in my shop this month start their fade line above the occipital bone and it always makes the top look bulky. You gotta drop that line right at the bone or the whole shape falls apart. Anyone else running into this with newer barbers?

Is it just me or are these guys skipping past the whole "feel for the bone" step in barber school? I know some newer barbers get nervous about taking the fade too low but starting above the occipital is worse because you end up with this weird mushroom look. I had to fix two of those this week for clients who came in with that bulky top and the fade just disappearing into nothing. Did your teachers actually show you where to anchor the guideline or was that just glossed over in the curriculum? Because I feel like if they understood the head shape they'd stop guessing and start working with the bone.

Did they actually teach you to feel for it or just tell you about it?
