I finally figured out why my clipper blades were dulling so fast

I was out in Denver last month cutting at a buddy's shop and noticed his blades stayed sharp way longer than mine. He asked if I ever cleaned the little gunk buildup under the tension spring. I never even thought about that. Now I pop the blade off every three cuts and wipe that area down with a dry cloth. Anyone else check that spot regularly?

My buddy Joe actually wrecked a whole set of Wahl blades before he figured that out. He was in Phoenix for a competition and his clippers started pulling and chattering halfway through his second cut. One of the old timers there popped the blade off, wiped a crusty black chunk from under that spring, and his clippers ran like new for the rest of the weekend.

Yeah, the 'crusty black chunk' part hit home for me. I used to think it was just a moisture thing or cheap oil causing the dulling, but after digging that same gunk out of my own clippers last week I felt like an idiot. That little buildup really does mess with the blade alignment way more than I ever gave it credit for.
