I saw a guy in Atlanta use a straight razor on a beard for the first time

I was at a barber meet-up there about six months ago, and this older barber was doing a full beard shape-up with just his straight razor, no clippers at all. He said he does it because it gives a cleaner line and the skin stretches differently. I tried it back at my own spot and it's true, you get a sharper angle on the cheek line. Has anyone else moved away from clippers for beard work?

Wait, he did the whole beard with just the razor? No trimming at all first? That's wild, I'd be so nervous about taking off too much hair at once.
