Made the switch from flat top to shears for clipper over comb and I'm never going back

I spent 6 months fighting with my clipper trying to get clean fades on curly hair in Phoenix. Finally watched a guy at a shop in Mesa do it with shears and a comb in half the time. Tried it myself on a regular last Wednesday and the blend came out way smoother, no lines at all. Has anyone else found shears work better for certain textures?

Started out using shears on my own hair actually. I got tired of the clipper tugging on my coarse hair and leaving these little red bumps. My dad was a barber back in the 80s and he always said shears were better for anything with texture. He used to cut my hair with them when I was a kid and I never had a bad haircut from him. But then I got into clippers because everyone said it was faster and easier to learn. Took me forever to realize that faster doesn't mean better when you're fighting with the hair the whole time. Now I keep a set of shears in my bag for any client with thick or curly hair and it saves me so much cleanup work.

My uncle was a barber too, back in the day, and he swore by shears for the same reason. I tried clippers once on my own thick hair and ended up with a patchy mess and those red bumps you mentioned. I finally gave in and bought a decent pair of shears off Amazon for like 30 bucks, and it was night and day. Now I just do a quick trim with those every few weeks and it's way smoother, no irritation.
