The razor edge test from a flea market changed my whole approach

Picked up a vintage straight razor at a flea market in Philly last weekend and the seller swore by the thumb nail test, said if it bites the nail it's sharp, if it slides it's dull. I tried it on a blade I thought was good and it slid right off, so I went back to stones and strops with way more pressure and angle control. Has anyone else found an old school trick that made you redo your sharpening routine?
