Buying a $20 DVD player from a pawn shop sparked a rethink

Last month I grabbed a dusty Magnavox DVD player for 20 bucks at a pawn shop in Tucson, mostly for nostalgia since my laptop has no disc drive. The remote was missing and the tray stuck a little, but it played every old movie I threw at it. My buddy who does AV work told me I was wasting my time on dead tech, but honestly, it made me watch films I'd forgotten I owned, no buffering or updates. Has anyone else picked up a supposedly obsolete gadget that turned out to be more useful than their main setup?
