My $12 USB fan from Five Below made my old router stop overheating and I can't stop thinking about it
So I have this old Netgear router I got at a thrift store in Mesa for like $8 about 3 years ago. It kept dropping wifi every couple hours and I was ready to toss it. Two weeks ago I stuck one of those cheap $12 USB fans from Five Below next to it and pointed it at the vents. Now it has been running 11 days straight with zero drops. I mean, the thing used to hit like 140 degrees on the bottom, now it's barely warm. It's kind of annoying that a stupid little fan fixed something I spent months blaming on my ISP. Has anyone else had a random cheap gadget just solve a problem that was driving them crazy?
Heat is the quiet killer for those routers, so yeah, a fan aimed at the vents fixes a lot of stuff people blame on the ISP. Mine used to drop wifi every evening like clockwork and it turned out the thing was cooking itself in a closed cabinet. Once it got air moving, no more drops at all. Cheap fix beats a new router any day, and honestly the old Netgear units run hot by design. Keep that fan on it and you might get another few years out of the thing.
