Picked a $15 refurb label maker over a $60 new one and the old tape jams less
Stood in the aisle at a surplus store in Reno debating between a beat up Brother and a shiny new one for labeling my spice jars. The clerk said the older units take the cheap third party tape rolls, and he was right, 40 labels in with zero jams. Anyone else find the older gear just feeds better?

Man, I read a thread on a repair forum a while back about this exact thing. The older Brother units had metal feed gears instead of the plastic ones they switched to later, and that's what keeps the tape from slipping. My cousin runs a small shop and still uses a PT-65 from the 90s for the same reason. Cheap tape plus metal guts is a hard combo to beat.
