TIL that a $6 cassette adapter from a Goodwill in Tucson has kept my 2004 truck's stereo alive for 5 years
My 2004 Ranger's CD player quit working back in 2019, so I checked Goodwill and found a dusty cassette adapter for $6. I figured it would break in a month, but here I am in 2024 still using it every single day to play Spotify through my phone. The tape deck itself is original to the truck, and honestly the sound quality is just as good as when I tried a $40 FM transmitter that picked up static from every other car on the road. The adapter has a little wire that I've pinched in the door maybe 50 times and it still works fine. I keep waiting for it to die so I can finally upgrade, but it refuses. Anyone else still running a cassette adapter in 2024, or am I the last one?
Why would you want that thing to die? A cassette adapter is basically a tiny magnet spinning a wheel, there's nothing in it to break. You got five years out of a $6 piece of plastic that was probably made in 1998, and you're sitting here hoping it fails so you can drop real money on a head unit that some kid will steal out of your Ranger in a Walmart parking lot. Meanwhile your FM transmitter picked up static because FM radio is garbage, not because the transmitter was bad. Keep the adapter, save your cash, and stop wishing death on the only thing in that truck that still works.
