Hardwood lump vs briquettes, my backyard switch finally clicked
I used to swear by briquettes for years, mostly because my dad always used them. Then last July I tried a bag of lump oak on a whim for some pork shoulders, and the flavor difference was huge. The lump burns hotter and cleaner, so I had to learn my vents all over again, maybe 5 cooks to get the temp steady. Now I only use briquettes for long overnight smokes where I need that even burn. Anyone else make the switch and never look back, or do you keep both on hand?

That lump burning hotter thing is real, my buddy Rich switched last fall and nearly torched his first brisket because he didn't drop his intake fast enough. He keeps both now, lump for grilling and briquettes for the all-nighters, just like you said.
