Shoutout to the guy who told me to stop buying pre-cut wood chunks
I spent about $80 over a few months on those little bags of hickory and apple chunks from the hardware store. My buddy came over last weekend, saw my stash, and just shook his head. He showed me a local firewood place that sells whole, seasoned logs for $50 a cord. I can split and chunk it myself in an afternoon. The smoke flavor is way better and more consistent now. Anyone have a good source for pecan or cherry logs in the Midwest?

My cousin had the same wake-up call last summer! He was buying those tiny mesquite bags for his offset smoker. A neighbor finally took him to a tree service that had just cut down a huge pecan tree. They gave him all the wood he could haul for free just to get rid of it. The flavor difference blew his mind, and now he's hooked on finding free wood from local arborists.

That's the smart move right there... getting wood from tree services. Most people don't think about the drying time though. Green wood straight from a fresh cut won't burn clean, it'll just make bitter smoke. Gotta let it season for like a year before it's any good for smoking. Your cousin probably got lucky with wood that was already sitting for a while.
