Went back to my hometown BBQ joint after 12 years, the pit was gone

Stopped by Leroy's Smokehouse in Tuscaloosa last weekend while visiting family. Same painted sign, same rickety picnic tables out back, but the old brick pit room is now just storage for plastic coolers and bags of charcoal. Leroy's son told me they switched to a gas rotisserie setup back in 2018 because insurance got too pricey. The brisket still had that decent smoke ring, but it tasted like it was finished in an oven, no crust bite at all. Anyone else watch their childhood spot trade tradition for convenience, or is that just the way it has to go these days?
