My uncle handed me a box of VHS tapes from his garage in Cleveland, and one of them was just 40 minutes of a squirrel on a porch
So my uncle cleaned out his garage in Cleveland back in March and gave me a whole box of old VHS tapes because he knows I'm into weird footage. Most of them were junk, like half a taping of a Browns game from 1994 and some wedding stuff. But tape number 7 had no label on it, and when I popped it in, it was 40 straight minutes of a squirrel just sitting on his porch railing, no sound, no people, nothing else. The weird part is the tape kept going past the point where a normal home recording would stop, like somebody just left the camcorder running all afternoon. I watched the whole thing twice because I kept waiting for something to happen, and it never did, which somehow made it creepier than any ghost tape I've seen. My uncle has zero memory of taping it, and now I can't stop wondering who actually hit record and why they bothered. Has anybody else found a tape like this, where the total lack of anything happening is what gets under your skin?
Forty minutes of a squirrel on a porch railing sounds more boring than creepy to me. People leave camcorders running all the time by accident, my dad had tapes of basically nothing because he forgot to hit stop. The sound of a tape hum and a squirrel twitching is just static and wildlife, not a mystery. Weird stuff only gets scary when your brain fills in the blanks, and sitting through it twice is doing most of that work for you.
