Pro tip: don't blow $40 on a 'mystery' box of camcorder tapes like I did
Saw a listing on a local classifieds site for a shoebox of 12 Hi8 tapes from an estate sale in Sacramento. The guy said they were 'family memories' and wanted 40 bucks. I figured maybe I'd find some weird home videos or old commercials, so I paid up. Seven of the tapes were totally blank or had been recorded over with static. Three had a kid's birthday party from 1996 and nothing else. The last two were just someone's taping of a Kings game with the commercials cut out. I basically paid $3.33 per tape for garbage. If you see a lot of tapes with no labels or fake labels, just walk away. Has anyone actually scored something good from a blind tape buy, or is it always a dud?
Wait, seven of the twelve were blank or static? That's brutal. I mean the guy straight up lied about them being "family memories" when most of the box was dead air. The birthday party from 96 is kind of funny though, like you paid 40 bucks to crash a stranger's party 30 years later. Idk maybe the Kings game would be worth something if he had left the commercials in, old ads are the only reason people dig through those boxes.
