A guy in my shop yesterday asked me to 'just make it work' on a 15 year old carbon fork with a crack near the dropout.

Man that reminds me of a buddy who tried to fix a cracked frame with epoxy and zip ties... said it was fine for "around town." Saw him a week later with his front wheel taco'd and a new respect for basic physics. Some things you just can't patch up with good intentions. He ended up buying a whole new bike, which hurt his wallet way more than a fork would have.

Honestly, that's the kind of lesson you only learn the hard way.

Lessons you only learn the hard way" is basically the motto of anyone who has ever tried to save 20 bucks on a bike repair. Like, oh sure, I too could fix a cracked frame with zip ties and hope, but I also enjoy having all my original teeth. That "around town" excuse is the siren song of disaster. Bet his buddy learned real fast that physics doesn't care about your budget or your good intentions, just like getting your front wheel taco'd. A new fork is a lot cheaper than a trip to the dentist, am I right?
