Had a vintage bottom bracket seize up on me yesterday

I was servicing a 1980s road bike for a customer and the old cup-and-cone bottom bracket was totally frozen. I tried a 14mm socket with a breaker bar, but it wouldn't budge. Ended up soaking it in penetrating oil for a full hour and applying heat carefully with a small torch. It finally broke free, but the threads were a bit rough. Anyone have a good trick for cleaning up old bottom bracket threads without a dedicated tap?

That feeling when the breaker bar just laughs at you. Been there more times than I'd like to admit. For cleaning up those threads, a trick that's saved me is wrapping a strip of emery cloth around an old bottom bracket cup. Chuck it in a drill and run it through slowly. It's janky but it works way better than trying to do it by hand. Just go easy and use some grease.

Hold up, that's a solid trick but careful with emery cloth. It's pretty aggressive and can take off too much material from the threads. I've had better luck using a proper thread chaser or even just a brass brush in a drill. The brass is softer than the frame so it cleans without cutting new grooves. You really don't want to change the thread fit.
