Just realized I'd been setting chain tension by feel for 15 years
Had a rear derailleur skip under load in Helena last week, and a buddy asked when I last used the 3mm rule. So what's the real side here: do you go by spec or by hand after enough years?
Been wrenching on bikes for 20 years and honestly it's the same thing with torque specs on stem bolts. Everybody says just snug it up, then someone cracks a carbon bar and suddenly we all remember there's a number for a reason. The body learns bad habits fast and they feel right because nothing broke yet. Sort of like how people drive without checking tire pressure for years until a blowout on the highway teaches them. Your hands remember what worked, not what's correct.
