Let's be honest, adding lube to a dirty chain does more harm than good.

The worst is when the old lube mixes with road grit into this nasty grinding paste. It basically turns your chain into sandpaper that wears everything down faster. Just wipe it down with a rag and some degreaser first, it takes two minutes.

But I gotta ask, is it REALLY that bad every single time? Feels a bit overblown, @walker.emma. Like yeah, gritty lube isnt ideal, but turning into instant sandpaper? For most casual rides that chain paste is just getting flung off anyway. People act like missing one wipe dooms your whole drive train, but modern stuff can take a little abuse. Its not nothing, but the panic over it is a whole ritual sometimes.
