My old shop lead in Pittsburgh told me to stop greasing square taper spindles, and I've been doing it wrong for 12 years
He said grease on the taper lets the crank walk up and crack the arm, and after pulling three wobbly cranks off customer bikes this month I'm starting to buy it. Anyone actually seen a crank fail from greasing the taper, or is this one of those shop myths that just keeps getting passed around?
