Pro tip: My buddy told me to use a torque wrench on carbon seatposts, and it saved a frame.

He said 'just snug it' was a good way to crack a $900 carbon frame, so I borrowed his 5Nm wrench for my own build last month. It felt like overkill until I saw a customer's bike with a hairline crack from an over-tightened collar. Anyone have a favorite budget-friendly torque wrench they keep in their personal kit?

Seriously, who doesn't own one these days? A basic 5Nm click-type from any hardware store is like twenty bucks. It's cheap insurance against turning a tiny bolt into a very expensive mistake. Watching someone crush a carbon steerer tube with a big hex key is enough to make you buy one on the spot.

Who even owns a torque wrench?

Oh man, seriously! I get why seana14 might not own one yet (they can feel unnecessary until you actually need one). But spencer707 is spot on about that twenty dollar click-type being a no-brainer, right? My question is, once you buy one, how do you actually trust it long term? Do you test yours against a friend's wrench every so often, or just assume it's still accurate until something feels off?
