PSA: My shop's floor turned into a grease slick after a customer's 1990s suspension fork EXPLODED

I was in the middle of a tune-up in Austin when this ancient RockShox fork on a beater mountain bike just let go, spraying a quart of black, sticky oil all over my workspace and making the concrete so slippery I had to throw down a whole bag of cat litter before I could even move.

Yeah, cat litter is the move for sure. That old fork oil is like glue. Had a similar mess once and just kept sweeping in fresh litter until it stopped feeling like an ice rink.

My buddy in Denver had a Marzocchi do that, left a perfect black oil shadow of the bike on his garage floor.

Wait did your buddy ever figure out what caused it in the first place? Was it a seal failure or did the stanchion get scratched up? I always wonder if stuff like that is preventable or just bad luck after a certain number of miles.
