Question about the day I found out I'd been setting chain tension wrong for years
I was dialing in a rear derailleur on a Surly Cross Check last Saturday and could not get the shifting clean in the middle cogs to save my life, so I started blaming the hanger. I pulled out my hanger gauge, checked it twice (it was straight within 1mm), and then just stared at the bike for a minute before it clicked that my chain was way too tight the whole time. I'd been setting tension by feel for close to 8 years, just pushing down on the chain with my thumb and saying "yep, that's about right," which apparently is a terrible method. Loosened it up so there was real slack, and every gear snapped into place on the first try, no adjustments needed. So here's my debate: is the 1/2 inch of play rule actually the gold standard, or do you set tension by feel and just know when it's right? I want to hear from people who've done this way longer than me because I'm clearly not as good at judging by hand as I thought.
