Used to true wheels with a spoke wrench and feel, now I use a $70 dial gauge on every build
For about 12 years I trued wheels by ear and feel, squeezing spokes and watching the rim against the brake pads. Then a guy named Dale at a shop in Boise showed me his dial indicator setup and I watched him pull a wheel to 0.2mm in about 20 minutes that would have taken me an hour. I finally picked up a used Park Tool gauge for $70 off a retiring mechanic and the difference in consistency is real. Does anyone else here still trust their hands over a gauge, or am I late to this?

Well dang, sounds like Dale cost you $70 and about 12 years of thinking your hands were magic. I still true by feel on my own stuff because I am cheap and stubborn, but I will admit my wheels come out closer to 0.5mm than 0.2mm on a good day. A gauge does not have mornings where it is tired or distracted, which is more than I can say for me. How long did it take before you stopped second guessing the dial and just trusted the number?
