Wrote off wax lube for 6 years, a guy at the Boise co-op changed my mind in one ride
I always ran drip lube because I figured wax was for rich roadies with too much free time, but a mechanic I met at the Boise co-op last month showed me his chain after 400 miles of dusty gravel and it was spotless while mine was black sludge. He said the trick is you just have to actually clean the chain first, which is the part I never did right. So for you folks running wax, do you strip a brand new chain every time or just run it and hope for the best?
Hmm, careful there, because wax is actually way cheaper over time, not a rich roadie thing. I mean yeah the start up costs like 40 bucks for a bag of wax and a crock pot, but a bag lasts me like two years and I never buy bottles of drip lube anymore. That mechanic was right about cleaning though, and no you can't just run a new chain and hope. Factory chains come coated in this thick grease that wax will not stick to at all, so you have to strip it with mineral spirits or one of those chain cleaner things first or the wax just sits on top and flakes off in a day. After that first strip you just re dunk every few hundred miles and you're good.
