Overheard someone say the 3 episode rule is outdated, made me rethink my binges

I was at a coffee shop near Union Square last Tuesday and this guy told his friend he drops any show after 1 episode now, said his backlog is too long for slow burns. That stuck with me because I always give shows 3 episodes, but lately I've been burning through 5 shows a month and finishing maybe 2. Does anyone else stick to a strict episode count before quitting, or do you just trust the first 20 minutes?
