Rant: I watched 40 episodes of a show with the wrong subtitle track

So I binged this whole sci-fi series over a weekend, like 40 episodes in 3 days. Turns out Netflix had the English dub on by default and I never checked. The dialogue was so cheesy and the acting felt flat, but I thought it was just a low budget show. Then my roommate walks in, sees the actors talking, and asks why the subtitles say something completely different from what they're saying. Realized I'd been watching a badly translated dub the entire time. The actual voice acting and script are way better, I'm honestly mad at myself for not noticing sooner. Has anyone else powered through a whole series with the wrong audio settings?

the entire time" really got me. It reminds me of how often we just accept the default settings in life without questioning them. We don't check our assumptions about things like subtitles, or even bigger stuff like what news we watch or which routes we take to work. We just assume the thing in front of us is the real deal, and we miss a lot because of it. It's a little concerning how easily we can go through the motions with the wrong version of something and not even notice until someone points it out.
