Unpopular opinion: watching with subtitles ruins first time binges but helps on rewatches

My buddy told me last week he always turns subs off for the first run of a show like Dark or The Wire, then puts them on for round two, and I thought he was crazy until I tried it on Severance. Does the extra reading pull you out of the acting, or does it actually catch stuff you'd miss in the mix, which side are you on?
