Why does everyone say you need to watch 'The Wire' in order?

Honestly, I keep seeing people tell new viewers they have to watch every single episode of The Wire in order or it won't make sense. I think that's wrong and it scares people off. I got my friend to start with season 4, which focuses on the kids and schools, and she was hooked in two episodes. She went back and watched the first three seasons after because she cared about the characters. Starting with the most gripping part worked way better for her. Has anyone else had luck getting someone into a show by skipping around a bit first?
