Bookmarked a tutorial on fixing squeaky floors, ended up learning about house framing
So last Saturday I finally clicked on this bookmark I've had for like two years about silencing squeaky floors. I was just trying to stop the noise in my hallway, but the guy in the video starts talking about joist spans and subfloor thickness and I got totally sidetracked. Three hours later I'm down a rabbit hole about how my 1978 ranch house in Tucson is actually built. The squeak is still there, but now I know way too much about floor trusses. Has anyone else accidentally learned a whole trade from one random bookmark?

I totally get the appeal (I love a good side quest into construction knowledge too) but honestly I think going down that rabbit hole is actually a good thing. Knowing your home's skeleton can help you avoid expensive mistakes later, like drilling into a joist or cutting a hole where you shouldn't. The squeak might still be there, but now you know how to find the real source instead of just throwing sheet metal screws at the carpet.

Yeah I read something similar in a home repair blog last week, they were saying how most people don't realize that subfloor nails working loose over time is actually one of the most common causes of squeaks, not the joists themselves. The trick they mentioned was using a stud finder to map out the joist layout first, then driving screws at an angle into the subfloor to pull it tight. It's kind of a pain but way better than the guessing game. Your mileage may vary on how much time you want to sink into it though.
