My bookmark folder still has a link to a Geocities page about sending faxes
I was cleaning out my browser bookmarks the other night and found a folder I haven't opened since maybe 2008. It had a link to some Geocities page that explained step by step how to send a fax from a computer using a dial-up modem. I remember saving it because I was terrified of messing up a fax for my first real job, and this site had diagrams of the phone cord and everything. Now I scan documents with my phone and email them, and faxing feels like something from another planet. The weird part is I still keep that bookmark around, mostly because it reminds me how nervous I was back then. I also have a bookmark for a 2005 forum thread about the best way to organize CD-Rs, which I have not used in ages. Does anyone else hold onto ancient bookmarks just because they bring back a specific moment in time, even if the site is long gone?

The part about "reminds me how nervous I was back then" hit me hard. I still have a bookmark for a LiveJournal post about fixing a 2004 Honda Civic alternator, even though I sold that car in 2011. Every now and then I click it just to see the dead page and it takes me right back to my driveway, covered in grease, scared I'd break something worse. It's not really about the info anymore, it's like a little time capsule that only I have the key to. And yeah, the fax thing with diagrams of phone cords sounds exactly like the kind of stuff we trusted our whole careers to back then.
