A bad batch of coal nearly ruined my whole week's work on a custom gate.
I was finishing a big scrollwork gate for a client in Dayton, and the new bag of coal I got from the supply house last Tuesday just wouldn't get to a clean, high heat, leaving my welds weak and porous. I lost two full days redoing sections before I figured out the coal was the problem and switched back to my old stock. Has anyone else had a supplier send them a load of coal that just doesn't perform right?

Yeah I had the same thing happen with a supplier out of Cincinnati last year. Their coal looked fine in the bag but it burned way too dirty and left this weird crust on my welds that took forever to grind off. Next time grab a sample from the middle of the bag before you commit to a full run, because I've found the good stuff often gets mixed with junk at the bottom.

Honestly, did you call the supply house about that bad batch?

Nah, they were actually fine on my end. Ran a full test on the material and it passed all the specs. Might have been a different lot number or something.
