Caught my coal fire running cold at 4am and finally understood what a real clinker looks like
Last Saturday I was up at 4am trying to finish a set of tongs before a craft fair and my fire kept dying no matter how much air I gave it. I pulled the coal apart with my rake and found a big gray rock about the size of my fist sitting right in the middle of the pot, fused solid, choking off the whole hotspot. I had been adding more coal for an hour when the real fix was digging that clinker out and rebuilding the fire with fresh coal around the edges. I lost maybe 90 minutes of work but the fire came back hot enough to weld in ten minutes after that. Any of you got a trick for spotting clinkers early before they kill your heat?
