Finally got the heat right on my first forge weld after 18 tries

Everyone's so focused on the hammer blows and flux but nobody talks about how the color of the steel in low light is way different than bright daylight and that's where I kept screwing up for months.

Lighting makes way more difference than people realize for judging heat.

Used to write off the lighting thing as overthinking it but you're totally right, it messed me up for way longer than I want to admit. Did you switch to welding in the same spot each time?
