Guy at the Midwest Forge Meet told me my coal fire was too shallow and I'm still thinking about it
Was doing a demo at the spring forge meet in Marshalltown two weeks ago, just running a simple S hook for the crowd, when this old timer named Dale walked up and said my firepot was way too shallow for the coal I was burning. He grabbed a rake and scooped out my fire right there in front of like 20 people, then built it up in a mound about 4 inches higher and the difference in how clean the steel heated was night and day. Do you all build your coal fires mounded up like that or am I the only one who's been running them flat this whole time?
