I finally gave in and tried that Japanese water stone sharpening method everyone raves about
I was sure my old Arkansas oilstone was fine, but after seeing a guy in Boise get a mirror edge on a cold chisel in under 5 minutes, I had to admit it works. Anyone have a good source for a 1000/6000 grit combo stone that won't break the bank?

Yeah, I held out for way too long too. My first try with a water stone, I think I sharpened my thumb more than the knife. Got a little too excited with the angle and took off a layer of skin. Amazon has some decent combo stones for under forty bucks, just make sure you get a flattening stone too. Mine got a weird dip in the middle after a few uses.

Oh man, the thumb sharpening thing is too real. I started using a cheap angle guide from a hardware store, just a little plastic clip. It saved my fingers and my knives.
