My propane forge kept dying until I stopped using the regulator gauge

Last month my forge started sputtering and losing heat about 20 minutes into every session. I checked the burner, cleaned the nozzle, swapped hoses, even pulled apart the tank valve. Nothing worked. Finally a guy at the scrap yard told me to trust the flame, not the gauge. Turns out the regulator dial was reading 10 psi but actually delivering maybe 4. I borrowed his $20 digital manometer and the truth came out. After I replaced the regulator with a simple ball valve and a proper gauge, the forge ran steady for 3 straight hours. Has anyone else had a regulator gauge lie to them like that, or do you just read the flame color and call it good?
