Old timer at a hammer-in changed my mind about cable Damascus

I used to think cable Damascus looked cheap and gimmicky until I saw a guy named Frank weld a perfect billet from some old crane cable last weekend. The pattern came out cleaner than most of my stack welds, so what am I missing with this stuff?

Read a piece in an old issue of Blade magazine where one of the guys talked about how cable Damascus is actually harder to screw up than regular Damascus if you know what you're doing. The trick is getting the cable clean and tight before you even hit it with flux. Frank apparently did that step right, soaked it in something overnight to get the grease out. I'd bet most people who hate on cable Damascus have never seen a proper weld from a guy who takes his time. Sounds like Frank proved the technique has merit if you treat it with respect. Might be worth giving it another look if you can find old crane cable instead of that cheap hardware store stuff.

Cable soaked in something overnight? I'm trying to picture the smell of that setup.
